The Whitsunday Islands are a group of 74 continental islands of varying sizes located 900 kilometers (560 miles) north of Brisbane in Queensland, Australia. The islands' southernmost islands are located off the shore of Proserpine, while its northernmost islands are located off the coast of Bowen. Whitsunday Island serves as the geographic center of the island group, and Hamilton Island serves as its commercial hub. The Ngaro and Gia people are the area's traditional proprietors, and only their Juru people have a native title that is officially recognized in the Whitsunday Region. The islands are part of the Whitsundays area and are governed by Whitsunday Region. The Whitsunday Islands were recognized as one of Queensland's 150th anniversary icons in 2009 as a result of their status as a popular tourist destination.
